How to Fix a Dripping Tap

Important Things to do before you start:

  • Switch off the water supply to the tap.
  • Check if your tap has rubber washers or ceramic discs. If your tap handle only rotates a quarter of half a turn it uses ceramic discs. If the handle rotates more than this it uses rubber washers.
  • Check is the ceramic disc is manufacturer specific before buying a replacement.
  • If it has a ceramic disc you will need to replace the entire valve, if it is a rubber washer then you only have to replace that.
  • If you have any issues that you can’t fix we suggest you call a professional for help.

Step 1: Turn off the water supply by locating the stop tap.

Step 2: Using a flat head screwdriver, remove the red and blue indicator from the tap.

Step 3: Hidden behind the red and blue indicator will be a small grub screw. Using a 2mm Allen Keg loosen the screw until the tap handle can be removed.

Step 4: Unscrew the chrome collar to reveal a large nut.

Step 5: Loosen the nut using plumbing grips then unscrew by hand.

Step:6: Now it is time to replace the ceramic cartridge. This is really simple. All you need to do is pull it out of the tap.

Step 7: Before fitting the new cartridge it is a good idea to clean the inside of the tap. Make sure to clean out the screw thread as this is where a lot of grime and grit gathers.

Step 8: After checking that the lugs on the new cartridge match up with the holes inside the tap, fit it inside the tap.

Step 9: When the cartridge has been replaced, screw everything back together and then turn the water supply back on.

How to Clean a Bath

  • One easy way to help keep your bath nice and clean is to rinse the bath after every use. This cleans away any leftover soap and bathing products which leave residue.
  • To remove tough water stains, use a paper towel that has been dipped in white vinegar. Place it on the affected area and leave for 1-2 hours. After this scrub with a baking soda and vinegar paste, then rinse clean.
  • For a cheap and affordable method why not use bicarbonate soda. It gets rid of clogged drains and yucky smells easily, and also removes soap gunk that builds up around bath taps.
  • If your bath is covered with stubborn stains, then sprinkle the bath with baking soda. Then spray with a vinegar and water solution. The mixture should bubble for a few minutes, then get a sponge and scrub the mixture until a paste forms. Wait 15 minutes then wipe the mixture away and rinse clean. The stains should now be gone.

How to stop the Bathroom Mirror steaming up.

Steam can quickly build up on mirrors causing condensation. Then you come to look in the mirror when you get out the shower and you have to wipe the mirror clean. These are a view ways to prevent this.

  • Fit a new mirror with a heated demister pad, this keeps the mirror surface warm so condensation cant form. Click here to view our mirror page on the Bathroom Traders website. Then simply look out for de-mist in the listing.
  • Smear shaving cream all over the mirror and then wipe clean. The mirror should stay mist free for a while.
  • Pour a 50-50 solution of vinegar and water into an old spray bottle. Add a few drops of washing-up liquid into the bottle as well. Then spray the mixture onto the mirror. Wipe with a towel, the mirror should stay steam free for a few days.
